AIRPORT POLICE OFFICER

NATURE OF WORK

This is uniformed law enforcement patrol work in security and protection of life and property at the Bishop International Airport.

Employees in this class serve as a law enforcement officer implementing Airport safety and security procedures established in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws. Duties involve shift work and assisting the public and requires a high degree of independent judgment in the proper interpretation of established laws, rules and regulations and the determination of appropriate law enforcement and emergency first aid responses required.

Assignments are made orally or in writing and work is reviewed through observation of results obtained, conferences and periodic reports or evaluations.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS


Enforces established safety and security practices and policies mandated by local, state and federal authorities, issues warnings and citations and makes arrests.

Enforces air carrier security screening requirements.

Enforces federal anti-terrorism and bird control programs.

Works with U.S. Customs and other law enforcement agencies in special activities and narcotics surveillance.

Performs patrols of Airport terminal buildings, parking lots, runways and grounds for prevention of trespass, theft and other criminal activity.

Administers emergency first aid and CPR in accordance with prescribed practices.

Provides primary response in the event of an aircraft accident and operates required communications equipment.

Performs related work as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of laws, ordinances and rules affecting law enforcement operations.

Knowledge of law enforcement practices and techniques and first aid methods.

Ability to explain and tactfully enforce Airport rules and regulations to Airport employees, tenants and the public.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
